Stage Managing Events--Put on Resume?
« on: Jul 29, 2013, 03:08 pm »
Hey Everyone!!
Quick question: I am curious about putting events that you stage manage on your resume. I am stage managing a benefit this Saturday and then stage managing a gala next Monday. Should I just leave it off or does it depend on the event? Thanks!!

I put one-night-only type events under the heading EVENTS/CONCERTS and list the title of the event, the name of the director/coordinator, my title, and the producing company. If it's an annual event I do more than once, I list which years ('99, '03, or '98-'01).

How about weddings? Anyone ever SM'd one before and would you even consider putting it on a resume?
Context: We've had 2 receptions and a ceremony at the theatre, all of which I've coordinated and run.  Also, all 3 were for friends but I was paid for my time from each.

I think listing weddings can be a matter of personal preference. For me, not knowing how an employer would feel seeing weddings on my resume, I'd put Event Planning (or similar) under the Special Skills heading.

I would probably nix putting a wedding on your resume.  If I received a resume with that listed I would assume it is there to pad out a thin resume and at best ignore it, at worst discount everything else.  It doesn't really give me anything to go by in terms of what your experience is.  At least with a show or theatre company I can most likely find some information on it through a Google search as I'm considering the resume.

I would go with dallas's suggestion and list it as "event planning" or similar under your Special Skills, and then touch upon that a little in your cover letter (I'm all for keeping information on your resume streamlined and simplified and then using your cover letter to expand upon the points you really want to make about what you've done).

I wouldn't mention weddings.  Unless it was the Royal Wedding or something similar.
