Finding jobs for when I graduate
« on: Nov 17, 2014, 06:52 pm »
Hi there,

I'm looking for lists of stage management jobs or internships that will be available when I graduate in May, but am not finding much listed right now. Does anyone know of any places to look?  Thanks so much for any help.

There are a plethora of them out there! I have the list of theatres I applied to, but I was looking at theatre's with very specific goals. Is there a region you prefer?

1. See if your professors/university has connections to local theatres.
2. Look at the websites of theatres in your area to see if they offer them (or in the area you want to work in). Some might not have internships listed now, but might have a page about their internship program, and when they start accepting applications.
3. In the upper right-hand corner of the page, there's an internship survey, where people rate internships that they have done. Check out the theatres you're interested in.
4. Do want to work in theatre, opera, dance, all of the above? Putting a few filters on what you're looking for will help narrow down your search.
5. What area are you looking in? There are often job posting websites or listervs for different markets.

I'm guessing it's a little early for most theatres to be posting internships for the 2015-16 season, but you can probably figure out where you're interested in now.

It should be noted that these career paths are not mutually exclusive.

Hey- I found a great website when I was looking for apprenticeships/fellowships, I don't know where it came from but I'm applying to most of these.

newbielink:https://sites.google.com/site/theatrejobdatabase/full-season-work/stage-management [nonactive]

As you can see, they have lists for any aspect of theatre, whatever you want to do. Now, this isn't really employment, per say, but I graduated a year ago and have been unable to find work so I believe an experience like this will really help you.

Get on it quick though, most deadlines are March 1st.

Also, I found this site that lists out production companies that do summer stock theatre,

newbielink:http://www.cengage.com/resource_uploads/static_resources/0495898074/24674/summer_theatre_companies.html [nonactive]

so find your area or where you want to go and look.

Also, OffStagejobs.com is a site where a lot of work is posted, but I have yet to hear back from anything I have applied to on that site (and I have been applying for the last 8 months to anything and everything I can find)

See, my professors and university was less than helpful in this process, so I had to do a lot of this finding on my own. Hope this helps a little bit!

A good thing is to look at the list of EMC theatres- even if you don't necessarily think EMC will get you into a union, it's a giant list of theatres that obviously have internship/apprentice programs. Other than that, I've always found jobs just trolling through Playbill.com/OffStageJobs.com I have them on my daily reading list- even if I can't apply for a job at a specific theatre at the time it's posted, it's good to know that they pay this much, do these types of shows, etc etc.
And asking for professors' help is invaluable, I have to say.
