"Oh, yeah, I was finished hours ago. I gave it to Steve."

"Hey, Steve, you finished with the portable copier?"
"Uhhhh... I think Claire has it now."

"Claire, you done with the copier?"
"Yep. Keisha needed it. You know, grant season and all..."

"Keisha, you seen the portable copier?"
"Oh, yes, totally. I left it in Martha's office."

"Martha, do you have the copier?"
"No, Dennis picked it up twenty minutes ago."

"Dennis, have you got the copier?"
"Yeah, I did, but Janice came by and grabbed it right before you walked in..."

/Off Topic

This board has made my day off the Best Ever!

/On Topic

I've recovered copier jams many-a-time and never once had to use a multi-tool to do it. Just my own two hands.

COPIER!

Fine, you don't want to do this on the merits of use only? k..that's cool. Why not think of what the multi tool represents! The versatile piece of hardware that can do everything!

Just like a stage manager. You are all multi tools! Vote for your kind!

And like a photo copier, I like to turn out quality reproductions of the show time in and time out . . .

Like a photo copier, I am warm, not cold like the metal in a multi-tool

And you won't see me screwing around backstage like your common multi-tool.

Nick, I like how you are totally not responding to the fact you have a FINANCIAL INTEREST in the outcome of this bracket.

"Mr. Tochelli, how do you address the fact you refuse to disclose any and all financial gain you might receive from the multi-tool industry."

My simple response sir is that I make no commission from the sale of multi tools in my current position and you will note I soundly shouted down blue gel which I am also in the current business of selling.

My position on multi tool has nothing to do with my ready access to multi tools, but it is simply on the merits. While Mr. Shiner rightly points out that the further up in the world of theater you go the less likely you are to need a multi tool, he ignores the simple fact that as you toil in the beginning stages of your career, you are the be all end all. The odds of you needing to quickly repair something or yank a staple out of the set to protect a costume is much greater.

So I suppose my question to Mr. Shiner would be what about the younger generations, who obviously identify themselves with multi tools and their versatility, makes you so uncomfortable that you have to insult them to their very core?

Oh . . . ageism, you rear your ugly head.

It must be so nice around the holiday season, sitting in your counting house, NICK, counting your vast amount of wealth from your multi-tool sales . . . keeping warm, why us stage managers around the world sit with little more then a single lump of coal.

Stage Managers, here this . . . if Nick would have his way, yes, you would be able, to save a trip to a tool box, and fix an item.  YAY MULTI-TOOL - that's what it fofers.  But then he would have you, sit, perhaps by candlelight, with a dull pencil, and write out in LONG HAND, 20 or 30 times, copies of the rehearsal report to hand out.  When would you sleep?  When would you rest?  Think of the aches and pains in your hand, think of the heart break and sorrow.  Yes, yes, but we did save a trip to a tool box.  BRAVO MULTI-TOOL. Thank you for that . . . excuse me for not clapping, I think my hand just feel off due to all the long handed copying I am doing . . .

Wake up! WAKE UP!!!!

Don't let the 1%, embedded in the wealth and comfort of their corporate wealth/war chests - you know in your heart of hearts - you don't want to return to the dark ages of hand writing line changes, or, if you so happen to have an off-set printer handy . . .

Can we imagine doing new plays without a photo copier????  Seriously, but again, Nick would have us save a quick trip to a tool box.

Listen, yes, I am older, and further down the career path then some of you here - but without the photo-copier, we would have to go back to the horrors, and terrors, and chemical poisoning of the mimeograph machine - old stage managers know the horrors and the brain cells killed.  THAT'S THE WORLD NICK WANTS US TO LIVE IT.  Damp, purple, blurry copies - are we cave men?  Are we peasants?    Have you tried writing in pencil on freshly mimeographed paper?  GOOD LUCK MY FRIENDS, GOOD LUCK!!!  It's world I don't want for me, my children or my children's children.

I like Nick, I respect Nick - I think Nick is good guy.  Great wife.  Beautiful kid.  Heck, I would love to take him out to dinner, buy him a drink.

But it doesn't not, in any way, mean his opinion is right.  We all know the multi-tool is a good replacement in a pinch, but let's call it what is is - cheaper, smaller versions of tools you should already have access to.  Shades, pale imitations.  Why not get the right tool for the job?

And what if that job is copying a lot of paper - my friends - I give you the photo copier.

Mr. Tochelli, in his last post, wants you to believe I am old, out of touch with the younger stage manager and their needs - lost touch with the pulse of the younger stage managers.  But, Mr. Tochelli, let's not just throw out almost 40 years of experience in this business, and over 25 years stage managing - let me offer advice, my sage wisdom - there is no contest - the photo copier by a landslide, the photo copier is the true friend of stage managers everywhere.

Oh this just in,  Nate Silver calls the race for the photo copier . . . calls it - pols are NOT EVEN CLOSED IN IOWA - and he predicts the photocopier will win by a bigger land slide then Obama won.

Just saying . . . be on the right side of history.

Mr. Shiner would have you believe a photo copier is the only way to reproduce your work. He assumes you would not be able to think your way out of a paper bag should photo copiers disappear. Do you want him dictating to You?

You're telling me if you had no copier you wouldn't think to fire up an old bed scanner and create an electronic version of what you need "copied" so you could simply print it out at the same place you would get "copies" made? Now that you've eliminated the copier, you have created an electronic script you can now email to tech savvy modern actors who read scripts on the go on smart phones and tablets.

Yes, a multi tool saves you trips to the tool box. And despite what was recently implied by Mr. Shiner multi tools do the job of all the tools it contains as well if not better than the dedicated tools. Mr. Shiner does not wish us to throw out his experience as a stage manager but as the SM of many new works, I can tell you photo copiers are worthless. I printed more from home than I ever spent t a kinkos.

How can we over look the ability to PRINT new works? While Mr. Shiner tries to paint a picture of me out of touch an rubbing elbows with the rich 1% of society, what he fails to recognize is my modern experience like 99% of you who don't have it a well off as him. He would have you spend a hundred dollars or more on copies of new scripts. I'd suggest you take that money and invest in a laser printer and do it yourself. This is the boot strap mentality that has kept you afloat in this business for as long as you have been. Mr. Shiner would have you submit to Big Copy without questioning an alternatives. I don't want to say he called you sheep, but you could easily make that leap.

And let's be honest, photo copiers have been used for horribly inappropriate office shannanigns. I point out the famous case of Lumburgh v. Unidentified butt cheeks. Is this the type product you'd foist on the theatrical world?

My final point on this matter for the moment is simply this: when was the last time a photo copier came equipped with the ability to open your beer? Multi tools help you during, and after your work day.

And we get the explanation for Mr. Tochelli's lies, decent and, and obvious, slip in rational judgement . . . Mr. Tochelli's apparent rampant alcoholism . . . beer is an evil mistress.

Again, he doesn't deserve our hate, just our pity - - - beer drinkers.

Excuse me, but beer is the drink of champions next to Mountain Dew.

However i would point out that Mr. Shiner fights with ad hominem rather than try to take on my 100% factually accurate statements. He'd rather attack the messenger than the important message I've carried to you during this current debate.

Don't let the brush he's using to falsely paint multi tool in your minds. Do the right and honest thing.

As Founding Member and President of the Canadian Chapter of the political organization Young Stage Managers for the Photocopier, I have this to say:

When I was in high school, I was trapped in an environment where access to the Photocopier was by pass-code only. As such, I was denied a great part of the stage management experience - an experience which every young Stage Manager has the right to live in full. My first true encounter with a Photocopier did not occur until I attended university. When my stage management mentor went on maternity leave, did she leave me with her Multitool? No, my friends, she did not. She left me her photocopy code. From that moment on, I knew my stage management would never be the same. For this great gift, I thank my mentor every day.

I live in Canada. We are a great country. A country of ice rinks. A country of husky puppies (seriously cute). A country of free health care. And like free health care (not to mention the huskies), photocopies are something we can - indeed, we should! - be proud of.

Let all the children photocopy! Let them distribute new script pages far and wide! Let us bring toner cartridges to every home in North America! Hell, every home in the world!

It's sad how much enjoyment I'm getting from this thread. So so sad...

And yet, I would have taken a year of this over the 2012 election coverage ANY DAY.

Mountain Dew?

Yes. Mountain Dew. What do the rest of you drink? Coffee? That bitter swill we used to replace tea in order to show England we didn't want their superior drink?

It's sad how much enjoyment I'm getting from this thread. So so sad...

I find that people who bandy the word Socialist around tend to use it in the inappropriate way. This is an example of such a misuse. Liking things other than a photocopier does not make you a socialist. Being a socialist makes you a socialist.

LCSM: You vote against your own interests and it is sad. I am filing paperwork to have the YSMPC registered as a hate group.
