December Madness!
« on: Nov 25, 2012, 01:05 am »
We're coming up on the 13th anniversary of SMNetwork, and next year will be the TENTH anniversary of the forums! (Crazy, no?) So I thought we should have a little fun and decide once and for all what the ultimate stage manager's symbol should be. Being your typical unathletic theatre nerd, I've always felt left out of sports excitement, so starting December 1, 2012 we will be taking on this challenge... tournament style.

That's right, it's the office supply/power tool championships. Gadget thunderdome.

Much like with sports seasons, I've come up with a loosely seeded tournament order and arbitrary "divisions" based on levels of stage management experience. I have attached the starting lineup and a bracket form to this post for anyone who is inclined to gamble on such things or wants to play fantasy football with the tools included. Pick your favorite and root for it as if it were your home team. It will make things far more interesting. Feel free to campaign for your favorite items, extol their virtues, and trash talk the other stuff. *evil grin*

Matches will be decided by poll. Four polls will run simultaneously for the first two rounds, each round lasting approximately half a week. This means we should be finished in early January. Give your relatives another reason to look at you strangely - stop by and cheer for your favorite all through the holiday season!

EDIT: Bracket updated with latest results 8 Dec 2012.

(if it's the 13th anniversary, shouldn't we have a bat mitzvah?)

Ha! Does that mean I should be pestering it about why it hasn't found a nice social network to marry?

It's been flirting with LinkedIn, Facebook and who knows who else. But it's only 13, it's too young to settle down!

Finally, a bracket competition I can play.  And understand what's going on....

This should be interesting. I'm rooting for the classic Com Headset

Provided Nashua 357 is in the starting lineup, my money is behind Gaff all the way.

*spoken like an ESPN analyst*

From Community theater, there should be stiff competition for #1 seeded Gaff tape having to go up against two intense rivals: Glow Tape in the sweet 16 and then onto Spike tape (who will have beaten the theatrical red headed step child duct tape) in the Elite 8. This division looks to be a blood bath. *Community theater division sponsored by Pro Tapes.*

In the Regional Division, traditional favorite headset/com has a hard road. Despite it's seeding, it has a great history and should be able to knock velcro right out. But it's going to have a tough match up when it meets Cell Phone in the Sweet 16. I think this division comes down to Cell Phone and Multi-Tool in a very versatile match-up. *Division sponsored by Gerber...no Leatherman...no Gerber....I mean Leatherman*

What I'm really interested in is this Commercial bracket here:
#2 seeded Pencil should have an easy path into the Elite 8 of the Commercial division where we will witness an old school/new school battle between it and #7 Laptop. This one is definitely gonna smell of wood chips and Ozone when the dust settles. *Jointly sponsored by Ticonderoga and Bic*

Finally: The College division is going to be a rough one to predict with no clear cut leader in the pack. Protractor had a great run, but are plagued by nerdiness and unnecessary ancient computations. You could assume #6 Tape Measure comes out of the division easy, but it has a beast of a battle with perennial favorite Stop Watch in the Sweet 16 and should have to face the ever present (but entirely unsexy team) of Binder in the Elite 8. *Sponsored by Radio Shack....what? you expect a theater person to purchase an Omega stop watch? How much money do you think we make??*

It's my opinion that the final match up will be the #1 seed Gaff tape, and the winner of the #2/#7 match up of Pencil/Laptop for the December Madness championship! Should be a good one!

This is my long winded way of saying this is awesome.

I'm not entirely sure what this is all about but the icon is certainly a time piece of some sort, the antiquarian in me suggest a pocket watch or traditional (but elegant) stop watch... (am I even *near* the right track here??)  ::)

Gaffe tape girl since 1990 (that's when I learned about the stuff) but I think spike tape might be the one to beat.

Dark horse is Mor-Tite. That stuff sat in my kit for years.

China, each member can choose or upload an image that serves as a means of quickly identifying us when we post. They're called avatars or icons. Some people (like nick_tochelli and jcarey) use headshots or photos of themselves. Others use symbols. The old-fashioned stopwatch is a bit of MS Word Clip Art and served as the original logo for this site back when I started it in 2000. When we transitioned from the original format to this current message board format, I made it my personal avatar and it's been thus ever since. :)

As for all of this, it's a tournament similar to the sports tournaments that drive everyone nuts throughout the year. Instead of basketball teams and football teams we've got stage management tools like gaff tape and pencils duking it out for the position of "favorite stage management gadget." In other words, we're being silly.

I'm so excited. I am printing the bracket out as we speak. I am filling it out.

I love this.

Printing. Posting on cubicle board. Watching as passersby glance and marvel at the awesomeness that is stage management December madness!

Huh, that's funny. That look of 'marvel' also resembles the 'that woman is crazy' look. Strange.
