Community, Round 6: Flashlight vs Paper
« on: Dec 18, 2012, 01:25 pm »
This match will be a battle between the rehearsal room and backstage. Stage managers have chafed for years at the industry's tendency to see them as paper pushers. If the last Regional League matchup between a paper-based tool and a backstage tool is anything to go by, this could be a very interesting game!

Paper beat glow tape previously, meaning that it's accustomed to battling lighting and safety devices. However, the flashlight's versatility and range of specialized attacks will be harder to withstand. Flashlight could bring to bear anything from the powerful scorpions to the massive 4 D Cell Mags to the tiny bite lights. Of course, paper can form itself into many shapes to counteract the onslaught.

Which will win? We'll know Friday at midnight. Game on!

As a very laptop-friendly SM, I cannot imagine running a show without paper.

Conversely, I have run shows without flashlights. (Tiny studio space + blue gel + station lights = I guess I might have used it to charge glow-tape, but hardly anything else.)

Theatres do need flashlights (otherwise latecomers would be tripping all over the place), but stage managers? Useful, but not mandatory. Paper, on the other hand...

I'd rather go paperless than have a dead actor because they couldn't see their escape path via my flashlight.

This is an uneasy alliance. But I'm glad to reach across the tech table to agree with Matt!

Matthew and Nick have now formed an unholy alliance that I fear is the last sign of the apocalypse.

P.S. - PAPER, YOU SOCIALISTS!

I'm using what I learned from watching the election coverage and applying them here. And stop trying to stifle me just because I'm part of the 47%!
