Community, Round 5: Gaff Tape vs Spike Tape
« on: Dec 15, 2012, 01:13 am »
Two apples from the same tree are facing off in the opening match of the Sweet Sixteen. With the home court advantage, standing two inches wide, monochromatic and tenacious we've got Gaff Tape. It handily trounced staples and paperclips 55 to 2 in the last tier, but it's going to have an uphill roll against...

Spike tape. Multiple colors and a narrower frame than gaff, but essentially cut from the same cloth. Spike was bloodied in its battle against Post-Its but came out ahead, winning 37 to 10 against despite fighting on a foreign court. Can it pull out the upset and topple its big brother?

The obvious sticky point (pun intended) will be that gaff tape can become spike tape with little provocation, and vice versa. Can spike's convenience and flash overcome the juggernaut of the gaffa?

Voting closes at noon central time on Tuesday.

Tape vs. tape? You're a cruel, cruel woman.

(Why am I here, what just happened, and why am I holding half a baby?)

Especially as spike tape is gaff's anorexic (and slightly less sticky) sister. In a pinch, ripping 1cm into the top of a roll of gaff gives you spike tape... but have you ever tried to secure cables with spike tape? It doesn't work.

I have to say though, as I've moved up professionally I've had to use less and less gaff over spike tape. Has anyone else found this to be true?

In this tape vs tape debate keep this in mind: gaff tape can break down to spike tape, but spike can't gain an inch and a half to become gaff.

As a seller of both tapes, my soul is on fire having typed this.....spike tape/gaff are the same thing...literally. All color variety etc are identical. The only difference is width.

i tend to gaff paint a lot of stuff for events.

true, you can break down gaff to spike, but very hard to stitch together spike to make gaff.  I mean you can, but seriously, who has that much time.

For my professional ballet world, Gaff is king. My dancers hate vinyl tape, so I tape my seams with Shurtape P-628 Gaff. I provide the same Gaff to my Master Electrician, Head Carpenter, Sound Engineer and Prop Master. Spike is used, but not as much.

Gaff!

DUUUUUDE?!? How in Hades is gaff winning?? Too much time is being spent on the multi-tool/copier debate!

Well, my rationale: Spike tape ensures that actors hit their marks.

Gaff tape ensures that actors don't cut themselves to bits on sharp/pointy objects. (Especially in the dark.)

Given the choice between having an actor blow a mark or having to rush an actor to hospital, I'm quite content to let them stand a few feet out of their light.
