Commercial, Round 2: Laptop vs. Straight Edge
« on: Dec 04, 2012, 02:03 pm »
Round 2 of the commercial division sees the introduction of another candidate predicted to go all the way to the finals - the versatile and popular Laptop. However, stage managers who prefer to use paper scripts will know the value of the Straight Edge for writing cues and effectively staying on book. If last week's digital-analog head to head of binder vs light board is any indicator, this could be an interesting match.

Poll will remain open through Friday at midnight CST.

Ready for your mind to be blown?

Almost every laptop has a straight edge. *throws down mic*

I always wondered how ticked off Chris Rock would make local houses when he threw their mics to the ground at the end of his sets.

The straight edge certainly serves its purpose. And if you are like me, that straight edge may serve other roles by also being scale rule. In its own league it is a good tool.

But overall the more versatile Team Laptop has the nod here. Especially if they start the new rookies, iPad and tablet. Straight edge can't communicate effectively and will likely crack under pressure.

I can use my lap top as a straight edge . . . can't use my straight edge to type a prop list.

Although I voted for laptop in this round, I will have very mixed feeling if it goes all the way and wins the finals, as I remember this profession, prior to the laptop. I'd be curious as to what tool would win, if the laptop was out of the mix, entirely!

Ticked off? If I had a sold-out Chris Rock show through my venue, I wouldn't be ticked off, I'd be planning to replace that microphone later.

In fact, all of my microphones.

And most of the lights.

And we probably need a new portable mixing board.

And there are a few locks that need changing.

And we really need a few more intelligent lights for the studio space.

And we'd still have enough left over to take the crew for beer and pizza.

Losing a microphone? I'll cope. :P

Honestly, I have a feeling Pencil might take this one, regardless of Laptop. I can't buy 20 laptops for two dollars, and hand them out to the cast and crew when they forget theirs.

More importantly, would you trust your actors with a tool more complicated than a pencil?

Unsharpened, of course. And with the eraser removed, just in case.

But if you remove the eraser, they might hurt themselves on the edges of that metal circle. (I distinctly remember doing that as a kid).
