MFA Stage Management - Musical Theatre
« on: Aug 28, 2011, 01:41 am »
Been exploring the websites of grad schools as well as this area of the site.  Really interested in pursuing an MFA, although looking for somewhere that has a focus on musicals - no luck so far.

Any suggestions?  :)

In your shoes, I would contact Syracuse University and talk to their graduate coordinator; they have an extremely strong musical theatre program for undergraduates and there may be a way of "creating" an SM MFA that took advantage of that.

To my knowledge, Yale and UCSD do not have strong opportunities built into their curriculum for musicals.

There is no MFA Stage Management that focuses on musical theater stage management, but there are programs that do musicals

Look at Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and UC Irvine (Has a MFA in Musical Theatre).

Thanks guys!

Was totally unaware of CCM - although have taken a look at Irvine briefly - must have ruled it out for some reason in my initial search, but can't see why at the moment.   :o

UCSD is currently my top choice for 'non musical heavy'  although I think 'musical heavy' is the route I am heading at the moment.

Any current or alums of the UCI or CCM MFA programs?

I would look into the current UCSD and La Jolla Playhouse and Old Globe relationship.  Why not get a good education, but have the opportunity to work on professional musical theater pieces?

I went to UCI as an undergrad.  CCM never wrote me back when I wrote 11 years ago looking for a grad school.

This may have changed, but 7 years ago when I was applying for grad schools CCM was the only one that I looked at that required GRE scores. Since I was already a couple of years out of undergrad I crossed them off my list as I was not about to put out the additional cost of that test just for one school.

I am looking at CCM for grad school right now.  None of the MFA programs require GRE scores.
