Internships?
« on: Aug 01, 2007, 07:36 pm »
Hey all. I was just wondering if anyone here knew about any LORT Theatre internships (outside of NY) that offer housing. I'm looking to get far far away from the new york scene for a while (or forever). I've been doing alot of research but I havn't found much with housing.

Thanks in advance!

Hrm. Well. The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is www.backstagejobs.com

They have listings of various internships that are available with contacts you can make. Hope this sort of helps!

Shakespeare Santa Cruz is LOA to LORT and I believe they offer dorm housing to their non-Eq asms (not sure if you are looking for intership specifically for some reason);  of course, they are in the middle of their season right now so you'd have to wait until next summer.

Edit: clearly I was wrong about the possibility of housing for internships...

I think you are going to be hard pressed to find housing for an internship with the status of LORT theatre budgets.  I know LORT theatres that are going so far as to refocusing their casting of Equity actors to hire more locals to avoid the housing costs.  Shakespeare Santa Cruz is LOA to LORT and I believe they offer dorm housing to their non-Eq asms (not sure if you are looking for intership specifically for some reason);  of course, they are in the middle of their season right now so you'd have to wait until next summer.

Yeah I figured. I just wanna leave new york but I dont think PAing / ASMing will pay me enough that I could live anywhere else.

People's Light and Theatre just outside of Philly does. The pay is ok, but they house and you get benefits so you can make it work.

I did an internship at the La Jolla Playhouse years back, and they did offer housing.  They didn't pay, but they did reimburse me for mileage too.  I don't know if they still do, but if you want to get really far away from the East Coast, that's pretty far.

I wouldn't give up on getting non Eq. Assistant and PA jobs that pay enough to pay rent.  My last PA job was at another LORT, and I had no problem paying rent with about a week of work, health benefits, parking, overtime, and a season contract. It's not get rich money, but I wasn't broke, so it was worth the move.  Those kinds of jobs come around every once in a while.  I'd look at ARtsearch.

There are quite a few theater internships in the DC area.  I know the Shakespeare Theatre Company houses their interns, so does Olney Theatre Center, Center Stage (in Baltimore), and The Studio Theatre is planning to house interns, though I'm not sure if that starts this coming season or not.

If you dig around on the websites of other area theater's through the League of Washington Theatres website and you may find some others:

I second what Rebbe says about the DC theatres; several theatres offer internships, and it's a really great theatre community.  I did my internship at Olney Theatre Center and can give you a first hand account if you're interested; just PM me.  Roundhouse Theatre and Arena Stage also offer internships/apprenticeships, but I'm not 100% sure that they offer housing.  You can find links to all of the major DC theatres by following the LOWT link that Rebbe posted.

I did an apprenticeship at Round House- they don't offer housing but they do offer health insurance, and I was able to live on what they paid me. It's a great program, and I would highly recommend it. PM me if you have any questions about it. I think someone already mentioned it but I believe the Shakespeare and Olney offer housing for interns.....

I believe Trinity Rep in Rhode Island houses people?  Check ArtSearch and playbill.  Or call the theatres and just ask!

I am actually going to be e-mail every LORT Theatre and asking about Internships and PA jobs. I really want to work in the regional theatre world, can ya tell?

Join us…join us…but also remember that working in the regions isn’t just about LORT.    You may want to start your search by thinking about where you do want to live, or look at the theaters which are doing work you enjoy, and then research what kind of contract they’re working under and what positions they offer.

Seattle is my first choice and LORT was the first place I thought to look. My first choice is the Internship at Seattle Rep I have heard great things about it! My second would probably be ACT. Thanks for your input!

Phoenix Theatre in Phoenix, Az is a LOA to Lort D theatre. They just started their season, but check back for next year. They give you housing and a small weekly stipend I think. Everyone I've talked to has really enjoyed it. phoenixtheatre.com

I did the Seattle Rep program last season and am happy to answer any questions you have about it or about living/working in Seattle. It was a great program and I totally recommend it.

I would also suggest checking out websites of LORT Theatres- I also really wanted to intern at a regional theatre, but found all the info online. You don't want to bug them by asking obvious questions if the internship info is readily available otherwise. You can and should always ask to talk to current interns and find out what opportunities they are getting and how their experience is. And oftentimes that info is disseminated to the interns from the department that will take a look at your resume, so it's good that it shows you're really interested. I also found that I got a lot of info from them during the interview process, so you can just shoot for that point and then glean info and ask questions during the interview- you get to interview them too!
