SM Internships/ACTF SM Prompt Book
« on: Sep 22, 2006, 12:25 pm »
I am getting ready to apply for internships next summer. I've never done an internship before so I have a few questions... ??? Is it ok/normal to apply to many internships and if you're accepted for multiple, take the one you want? (At our college last year, everyone auditioned for the same local internship and got a part, but I want to venture out in the world.) Also, does anyone have any experience with SM internships, know where the good ones are, what to have in your application, etc? I'm also interested in dramaturgy so any internship where the two overlap would be great also. Any advice is appreciated. I have already found a good many on the web, but would like to hear from people with specific experiences.

and... Has anyone done a prompt book for ACTF? I didn't get to go to regionals last year, so I have never seen any examples. Mine already has the script (with blocking, etc.), rehearsal/production reports, any paperwork that is handed out/posted, draftings/concept statements, sign in/out sheets, etc. (It was mentioned by someone who went last year that some research might be included as well. I'm doubling as dramaturg for this show so I have plenty - if I do, what and how much do I include here?) Multimedia is also allowed if you have a laptop (I do) - what does that mean? Blank forms/show photos/???

Thanks in advance.

Yes, it is considered pretty standard to apply to multiple internships, and take the one from the group of those who accept you.

Yes, apply for as many internships that you can find that interest you.

And there are many good internship programs out there, are there specific regions/experiences you are leaning towards?  I interned at Steppenwolf and The Goodman in Chicago and have worked as a production assistant (which often falls under the auspices of the intern department) in NYC.  It's been a little bit since I've actually applied for an internship, but I remember some of the avenues I pursued during my research.  Feel free to PM me if you want specifics about my experiences at these theaters or how I came across the programs.

I can't, however, help with the ACTF prompt book question.  Best of luck!!

Its just like applying for a job.  Try to apply to as many as possible and if multiple places say they want you great, that means you got skills they are looking for, pick which one sounds the best.  About the dramaturgy thing all I can suggest is when you are applying mention your interest in the cover letter saying something and question about it at interviews.  Its one of those things some places might like the fact you are interested in 2 areas and will be willing to work something out.

I went to ACTF in college.  I had my full production book on my display table and then put "highlights" from it (i.e. a couple sample blocking pages, a couple sample pages from my prompt book, rehearsal/performance report, etc) around the book.  I also happened to still have my callboard from the show (my college didn't have a permament callboard, so we used foam core boards), so I displayed it with calendars, call sheets, etc.  And then I setup a couple of show photographs that were from particularly difficult sequences so that I could talk about them in my interview.

If you have more questions, you can send me a pm (I can also tell you about my intern experience).

All the best!!
