Hi folks!

I was just looking through this thread for the first time in a little while, and I noticed that the original post mentions that Virginia Tech's program is a "general graduate degree in theatre with a specialization in Stage Management".

As a 1st year grad student at Virginia Tech, I wanted to clear this up.  The program is specifically an MFA in Stage Management, and not a general MFA in theatre.

Madkisso, might you be able to edit your original post?  I'd hate for people to get the wrong impression about the program.  Thank you!!

By the way, if anyone has specific questions about the MFA in Stage Management program at Virginia Tech, please let me know!

"Also, and this may be older info. as well, but Wayne State seems to be a program dedicated to Stage Management, so why is it listed as a specialization? What is the criteria there?"

I went to Wayne State and graduated a few years ago.  The program at Wayne State is dedicated to Stage Management, but the wording on the degree is MFA in Theatre I believe.  It doesn't say MFA in Stage Management, but the program is focused on stage management.  Learning through experience.

Let me know if you have any questions about the program.

I've also been looking at grad schools and am running into challenges with finding good solid information on them. Did anyone go to San Diego?

Hi all,

I have come to clear up some misinformation I gave concerning the MFA program at Virginia Tech.  After I posted that it is an MFA in Stage Management I spoke with my advisor, who told me it is indeed actually an MFA in Theatre with a concentration in Stage Management.  Many apologies for the mistake and confusion!

This being said, that it is not specifically an MFA in Stage Management does not mean that the curriculum is not specifically focused to Stage Management.  In fact, the reason why I chose Virginia Tech is that each graduate student is able to shape and focus their own plan of study through studio work.  I was recently speaking with a Stage Manager who interviewed here, and she was very impressed with the structure of the program in that it is built based entirely around the needs of each student.  We spoke specifically about an MFA in Stage Management vs. Virginia Tech's MFA in Theatre with a concentration in Stage Management, and she found through her visit the same thing that I did--that a student who is striving to become a professional stage manager has more freedom to study what they need here than in many of the other programs.  Each Stage Manager is different, and Virginia Tech can embrace and compliment those differences.

At any rate I just wanted to clear up that I was absolutely wrong in my earlier post concerning the title of the degree, but I wanted to express that the school still offers a very competitive education.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about the program!

RADA and LAMDA have very good reputations. However, I believe that they either offer foundation degrees (pre-undergraduate) or BA degrees (undergraduate)-neither of which are graduate level-saying that, it all depends on what you want to get out of it and the specialisations on the courses. I noticed that Rose Bruford has been mentioned a few times-this also only offers a BA.
With regard to graduate (postgraduate) courses in the UK in stage management, I am finding them to be VERY few and far between. The only specific postgraduate course I have come across is at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (RWCMD) which offers an MA in Stage Management.

LAMDA  is the best college for stage management and technical theatre in the UK.  ( ;) declaring an interest !)

But as claire.illett says, there are almost no specifically post-grad SM courses in the UK. Plus, LAMDA and RADA's courses (and many of the others) are SMTT - you do lighting, sound, and construction as well as stage management. (And sewing, and voice, and first aid, and fire marshalling, and cueing from music, and stage combat, and ...)

Hey!
Brooklyn College, too!
Don't get confused by the "Performing Arts Management Program", which is also awesome, but within the Design/Production department you can get an MFA in stage management here...

I was looking at RADA in London.

Our program was scheduled to visit RADA next week and talk to the department head, but I will be unavailable that day...

Has anyone else looked at Grad schools outside of the US? (I've also looked into Rose Bruford)

I've been looking into Mountview Academy in London. It says it's only a 1 year graduate program though, which concerns me.

I found this website really helpful.  I used it to find out which school offered MFA stage management programs.  Mike Lawler also has a book on technical theatre jobs.

saerie,
That is a great list, thank you. I'm not sure if Grad School is my calling (I've been off anf on about it for 5 years), but that list is a great place to start and provides a really good snapshot of what's offered and where.

I just found another listing of stage management MFA programs on BroadwayWorld.com's College Center.  Here is the link:  http://broadwayworld.com/studentdegree/Master-of-Fine-Arts-in-Stage-Management

BroadwayWorld.com's College Center is missing quite of few programs . . .

Another great school in the UK that I don't see listed yet is the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.  They offer an MA in Stage & Event Management, and I know a few people who have done a semester abroad over there and absolutely loved it!  I'm listing the link below.
