Colleges?
« on: Aug 19, 2007, 12:47 am »
I am looking for information about SM Undergrad programs. Here's the twist: I have already spent two years in college, unsuccessfully pursuing a non-theater related degree. I just discovered this summer that such a thing as undergrad degrees in stage management exist. I discovered only last fall that graduate degrees were a possibility.

I only have one credit in theater, as the school I was at had an inadequate theater program, and I instead was involved with every extracurricular theater group on campus. Every job I've held in the past two years has been in technical theater.

I currently live in NC, and would not mind staying in the South. On the other hand, I was in school outside of Philly, and would not mind returning to that area at all.

Since I've already been in school for two years, and am down $80k, I am reluctant to sign on to another 4 years of undergrad. I am looking at NCSA, but I am not closing any doors at this point.

So I suppose I have two questions:

1. Having just discovered that such a thing as a BA or BFA in SM exists, I am fairly clueless. What schools ARE there where you can MAJOR (I am not interested in a theater major with a concentration in technical theater...perhaps with a solid concentration in SMing) in Stage Management?

2. Assuming that I have fulfilled core requirements, how long would it take for me to finish my degree? Is there anywhere where it would be possible for me to get my BFA and MFA at the same time, if I were to take another 4 years? I'm sure it depends on the school, but any input is welcome.

I went to college a couple of years to get GE's done, then transferred to get a BFA.  I know the school I went to had a minimum three year residency no matter what, so I couldn't finish in two years, and even retook some classes, even though I'd gotten A's at a different school, because they considered the level different.  They'll look through your transcript to see what they'll give you.  I'm not sure all schools have this time requirement.

You may want to consider transferring to a liberal arts school with a strong theater department. Depending on the courses you've taken and the courses required by the new school, you may be able to take mostly theater courses if the GEs cancel out. That way you can just focus mostly on the theater coursework and may be able to finish in less than 4 years. I don't know what classes you've taken or if this would work out, but it is an option you may want to pursue. Certain theater departments have a concentration in stage management, which is what it sounds like you want. I don't know about many schools in the south, so I can't give you any names. Sorry!

I would think, that in an intense conservatory environment like NCSA that you will need to start from year one in the stage management track, and thus spend 4 more years. Your general eds may apply. NCSA doesn't grant graduate degrees in stage management so you can't earn both in succession there either.

Again..these are just my assumptions..you may want to get in contact with a few schools that you're interested in, and look into the logistics of transferring into their stage management program.

NCSA would probably make you take at least 3 if not all 4 years of arts classes, which is not possible to double up or do any faster.  Conservatory programs like Cincinnati or Webster will be similar.

But UNC Chapel Hill also has a good theatre department, and might be better for your existing credits to transfer into.  Other UNC schools, or Penn State might also be worth looking into.  Since you already have some credits, I think looking into state schools might be a good first step.

I'm getting a BFA in stage management from the university of miami in fl....we take transfers pretty often, they usually start as a sophomore.
